FIRST EDITIONS

HISTORY

The only new USA first edition to appear in 1973 was THE BOOK OF PHILIP K. DICK from DAW in paperback. This came out in February. This collection contained nine of PKD’s short stories dating back to the Fifties. In July 1977 this collection was published in England by Coronet publishers as THE TURNING WHEEL And Other Stories.

Not much has been said about this collection as a collection, only one comment by PKD can be found and that is, rather, in connection with his other short story collection, THE BEST OF PHILIP K. DICK which came out from Ballantine in 1977. Asked by interviewer Kevin Briggs if PKD had a Don Wollheim story, PKD replied:

Matter of fact. I have. When I was preparing the Ballantine collection {THE BEST OF PKD}, Donald Wollheim wrote to me and said, "I'd like to do a collection of your stories." I said, "I'm sorry, Don, but I'm going through my stories to sell to Ballantine right now." He wrote back and said, "Well, Betty" -- Betty Ballantine was still editor --"Betty and I have different tastes. Give me what Betty doesn't want." And that's exactly what he got. Wollheim read them over and became hysterical. He said, "These are Betty Ballantine rejects!" I says, "Don, that's what we contracted for." He says, "Well, the stories aren't very good." And I said, "Yeah, and the price ain't very good, either." He published them, but he was grumpy about it. That's my Wollheim story.

But looking over the contents of THE BOOK OF PKD we can really find only one clunker, "A Present For Pat", the rest of the stories I’ve rated at 3 or 4 stars with one story, "The Defenders" having 5 stars. As a collection, then, THE BOOK OF PKD rates between and .
