The Eye Of The Sibyl The Exit Door Leads In

FIRST PUBLICATION

HISTORY

"The Day Mr. Computer Fell Out Of Its Tree" is another of PKD’s weird late short stories. It was written in the summer of 1977 and saw publication only once and that in Volume 5 of THE COLLECTED STORIES in 1987.

In a future world governed by a central computer that micro-manages everything something has gone wrong with the computer and it is doing silly things like pouring soapy water instead of coffee. The problem is traced, with the help of Joan Simpson; the head of World Mental Health who has been buried at the center of the earth for just such occasions, to one Joe Contemptible who’s anomie and discontent are causing the computer to fuck up. In the end Joe must move in with the wonderfully beautiful Joan Simpson and his expected happiness will cure the computer of its ills.

A silly story, obviously written for the real-world Joan Simpson, "The Day Mr. Computer Fell Out Of Its Tree" rates ô ô ô
